Hajj & Umrah
Hasan HadithSunan Abu Dawood 1892

رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.

Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina 'adhaban-nar

When to Read

This is the specific dua the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to recite when passing between the Rukn al-Yamani (the corner of the Kaaba that faces Yemen) and the Hajr al-Aswad (the Black Stone). It's a moment of immense spiritual significance during Tawaf, the circumambulation of the Kaaba. Imagine yourself there, circling the House of Allah, a place of profound mercy and acceptance. This dua is particularly fitting here as you are in a sacred space, seeking the best of both worlds.

How to Read

Recite this dua sincerely from the heart while walking between the Rukn al-Yamani and the Hajr al-Aswad. The Prophet ﷺ's practice shows us the importance of this specific location. Make sure you are in a state of Wudu (ablution) if possible. Focus on the meaning of the words, asking Allah for well-being and protection in this life and the next. It's not just about uttering the words, but about the intention and the seeking.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is incredibly comprehensive. It asks for 'hasanah' (goodness) in this world, which can encompass everything from good health, sustenance, knowledge, a righteous spouse, and success in endeavors, to inner peace and contentment. It also asks for 'hasanah' in the Hereafter, which means attaining Paradise and all the immense blessings it holds. Finally, it is a powerful plea for protection from the Hellfire. The Prophet's ﷺ emphasis on this specific dua in such a blessed spot highlights its profound benefit.

Source & Authentication

Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'Verily the standing (Rukn) between the Yemeni Corner and the Black Stone is an expiation for sins. And whoever keeps it for forty days, it is as if he has died having paid off his debts, and there is no dirham nor dinar left of him, and he will not meet Allah, Mighty and Majestic is He, with any sin upon him. And whoever performs Tawaf around the House seven times and prays two rak'ahs is as if he has freed a slave. And whoever throws two handfuls (of water) is as if he has freed two slaves from the children of Ishmael. And whoever of you says after the two rak'ahs: 'O Allah, grant us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire,' then it is a right upon Allah that He should make him pleased with the abode of this world and the abode of the Hereafter, and forgive him his sins.' (The narrator then mentioned a similar narration).
