Dua at Muzdalifah: Seeking Allah's Mercy Under the Open Sky

Hajj & Umrah
Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 3846

O Allah, I ask You for a heart that fears You, beneficial knowledge, truthful certainty, a steadfast religion, fulfilling trusts, ability against enemies, a good request, abundant gratitude, sincere repentance, repentance before death, comfort at death, forgiveness after death, Paradise, and salvation from the Fire, and acceptance of supplications. O Allah, I ask You for guidance and piety, chastity and contentment.

Allahumma inni as'aluka qalbann khashi'an, wa 'ilmann nafi'an, wa yaqeenan sadiqan, wa deenan qayyiman, wa ada'al amanati, wa qudratan 'alal a'daa'i, wa su'alan hasanan, wa shukran katheeran, wa tawbatan nasuha, wa tawbatan qabla al-mawt, wa rahatan 'indal mawt, wa maghfiratan ba'dal mawt, wa jannatan, wa najatan minan nar, wa qabulad du'a. Allahumma inni as'aluka al-huda wat tuqa, wal 'afafa wal ghina.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua is best recited after arriving at Muzdalifah, having left Arafat, especially during the stay there. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself made extensive supplications during his farewell pilgrimage at Muzdalifah. It's a time when you are under the vastness of the sky, a profound setting for turning to Allah with earnest pleas.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction. Raise your hands in supplication as you would during other duas. Focus on the meaning of each phrase and reflect on your needs from Allah. The setting of Muzdalifah, open to the elements, mirrors the openness of the heart required when turning to your Creator in earnest prayer.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates a profound seeking of spiritual and worldly well-being. It covers essential aspects of a believer's life: a humble and God-conscious heart, knowledge that benefits, unwavering faith, adherence to religious principles, integrity in dealings, inner strength, and the ability to ask Allah rightly. It also seeks repentance, protection, and ultimately, success in the Hereafter. The latter part of the dua specifically asks for guidance, piety, purity of character, and contentment, all of which are cornerstones of a life pleasing to Allah.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from 'Amr bin Shu'aib, from his father, from his grandfather, that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'The son of Adam has no better thing than remembering Allah saying: Allahumma inni as'aluka qalbann khashi'an, wa 'ilmann nafi'an, wa yaqeenan sadiqan, wa deenan qayyiman, wa ada'al amanati, wa qudratan 'alal a'daa'i, wa su'alan hasanan, wa shukran katheeran, wa tawbatan nasuha, wa tawbatan qabla al-mawt, wa rahatan 'indal mawt, wa maghfiratan ba'dal mawt, wa jannatan, wa najatan minan nar, wa qabulad du'a. Allahumma inni as'aluka al-huda wat tuqa, wal 'afafa wal ghina. And the best of what they ask for, is seeking well-being in this world and the next.' (Sunan Ibn Majah, Book 37, Hadith 3846). It is important to note that while this hadith mentions this specific dua as the 'best of what they ask for' in a general context, the Prophet ﷺ himself made numerous duas during Muzdalifah, focusing on remembrance and seeking forgiveness, as found in other authentic narrations. This comprehensive dua can be incorporated into your supplications at Muzdalifah.
