Dua for Protection from Oppression on Friday

Friday / Jumuah
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 588

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of Hellfire, and I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of the Dajjal, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of life and death.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhabi Jahannama wa a'udhu bika min 'adhabi-l-qabri wa a'udhu bika min fitnati-d-Dajjal wa a'udhu bika min fitnati-l-mamati

When to Read

This powerful supplication is particularly poignant on Friday. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to seek refuge in Allah from four things after every prayer, and Friday, being a blessed day, is an excellent time to increase our devotion. Make it a habit to recite this after your obligatory prayers on Friday, and indeed, any day you feel the need for strong protection against trials and hardships, including oppression.

How to Read

Recite this dua sincerely, with conviction in your heart that Allah is the ultimate protector. Raise your hands in supplication as taught by the Prophet ﷺ in many instances. Focus on the meaning of each phrase: seeking refuge from Hellfire, the grave's torment, the Dajjal's deception, and the trials of this world and the hereafter. The Prophet ﷺ used to say these words, so our recitation should aim to emulate his practice and intention.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses seeking protection from the most severe forms of punishment and trials, both in this life and the next. By seeking refuge in Allah from the punishment of Hellfire and the grave, we are asking for His mercy to save us from eternal damnation and the questioning that awaits. Seeking refuge from the Dajjal is a shield against the greatest fitnah (trial) that will occur. Asking for protection from the trials of life and death means we are asking Allah to keep us steadfast upon His deen (religion) until our last breath and to grant us an easy reckoning. The Prophet ﷺ stated that when these four things are fulfilled, he is absolved from them (Sahih Muslim 588), highlighting the comprehensive protection this dua offers.

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to teach them (his companions) to say: > **Arabic:** اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ جَهَنَّمَ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الدَّجَّالِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَمَاتِ > **Translation:** "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of Hellfire, and I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of the Dajjal, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of life and death." And when they finished praying, they would seek refuge in Allah from them. (Sahih Muslim 588)
