Yahya related to me from Malik, from Ibn Shihab, from Humayd b. 'Abd al-Rahman, from his father, that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "The parable of the one who sits to listen to knowledge before it is heard is like the one who goes to the market with a bag of sadaqa, and if he does not give anything, he still has the bag. The parable of the one who listens to knowledge after it has been heard is like the one who gives a sadaqa and it is taken from him." Yahya said, "Malik mentioned about the hadith of Ibn Shihab, that he said, 'And the strongest of what is related about this is that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, used to say: 'O Turner of the hearts, make my heart firm upon Your religion.'" (Malik said, 'I saw that in the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.')
