O Allah, I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow, I seek refuge in You from helplessness and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the overwhelming of debt and the subjugation of men.
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijali.
When to Read
This powerful dua is recommended to be recited frequently, especially after the obligatory prayers. Given its inclusion of seeking refuge from overwhelming debt and the subjugation of men, it's particularly pertinent to recite during the blessed hours of Jumu'ah, perhaps after the Asr prayer, when supplications are more likely to be accepted. You can make it a part of your daily remembrance, ensuring you capture the unique blessings of Friday.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and full conviction in Allah's power to protect you. It is best to raise your hands slightly, as was the practice of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, when making such supplications. Focus on the meaning of each phrase, truly seeking Allah's refuge from these afflictions. You can repeat it three times, mirroring the Prophet's ﷺ habit of repeating important phrases.
Virtues & Benefits
This supplication encompasses seeking refuge from a wide range of hardships, both internal (distress, sorrow, laziness) and external (debt, subjugation). By reciting it, we acknowledge our reliance on Allah for protection against all forms of misfortune. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself would frequently recite this dua, highlighting its immense importance and the comprehensive protection it offers.
