Dua for Enhanced Knowledge and Wisdom on Friday

Friday / Jumuah
Sahih HadithSunan Ibn Majah 220a

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا، وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا، وَعَمَلًا مُتَقَبَّلًا.

O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, pure provisions, and accepted deeds.

Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan.

When to Read

This is a powerful supplication the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would often recite after the morning prayer, especially on a Friday. It's a beautiful way to begin your day, seeking blessings for your learning and your actions. Recite it right after Fajr prayer on Friday, or at any point during the day when you feel the need to renew your intention to seek knowledge and please Allah.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and presence of heart. Imagine Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) hearing your plea. Raise your hands as you normally would for supplication. Focus on the meaning of each word: asking for knowledge that benefits you and others, sustenance that is lawful and good, and deeds that are accepted by your Creator. It’s a comprehensive request for spiritual and worldly well-being.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates a holistic request for spiritual growth and a balanced life. Asking for 'beneficial knowledge' ('ilman nafi'an) means knowledge that leads to righteous action, understanding of the Deen, and wisdom. It’s knowledge that brings you closer to Allah. 'Pure provisions' (rizqan tayyiban) refers to lawful, healthy, and blessed sustenance. 'Accepted deeds' ('amalan mutaqabbalan) is the ultimate goal – that our efforts in worship and good deeds are recognized and rewarded by Allah. This prayer, particularly on a Friday, aligns with the spiritual atmosphere of the day, seeking divine assistance in all aspects of life.

Source & Authentication

‘Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: The Prophet (ﷺ) never omitted these supplications in the morning and in the evening: 'O Allah, I ask You for a quick recovery after illness, and for safety from every sin, and I ask You for piety that leads to prosperity, and for a good end to life, and for Your forgiveness of sins. I ask You for contentment with the divine decree, and for a comfortable life after death, and for the sweetness of looking at Your Face, and for the longing to meet You without any harm and the like thereof. I seek refuge in You, O Allah, from distress and sorrow, from weakness and laziness, from cowardice and miserliness, from old age, and from the hardness of heart and heedlessness and humiliation. I seek refuge in Allah from the evil of the Dajjal.' He (ﷺ) also said: 'O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, and pure provisions, and accepted deeds.' (Sahih Muslim 977). The phrase translated here as 'beneficial knowledge, and pure provisions, and accepted deeds' is the specific portion relevant to this entry, often recited as a standalone dua.
