Friday / Jumuah
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 7

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا، وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا، وَعَمَلًا مُتَقَبَّلًا

O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, goodly provision, and deeds that are accepted.

Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan

When to Read

This dua is particularly potent on Friday, especially after the Fajr prayer, or at any point during the day leading up to sunset. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua upon waking for morning prayers, highlighting its significance for starting the day with intentions aligned with Allah's pleasure. We can make it a consistent part of our Friday routine, seeking Allah's blessings for our knowledge, sustenance, and actions throughout this blessed day.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, focusing on the meaning of each request. Raise your hands as you would for other supplications. It's best to say it with a clear intention, not just as a verbal exercise, but as a heartfelt plea to the Almighty. Consider reflecting on how you can actively pursue beneficial knowledge, seek lawful provisions, and strive for deeds that please Allah.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful supplication encompasses three vital aspects of a Muslim's life: knowledge, provision, and deeds. Seeking beneficial knowledge allows us to worship Allah correctly and navigate life's challenges. Requesting goodly provision ensures our sustenance is pure and blessed, bringing contentment. Most importantly, asking for 'amalan mutaqabbalan' (accepted deeds) is the ultimate goal, for without Allah's acceptance, even the most arduous worship is in vain. This dua, taught by the Prophet ﷺ, is a comprehensive request for a life that is pleasing to Allah.

It was narrated from Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) that when the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ woke up, he would say: 'Subhanak Allahumma wa bihamdika, ash-hadu an la ilaha illa Anta, astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayk.' (Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise be to You. I bear witness that there is no god but You. I seek Your forgiveness and I turn to You in repentance.) And Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to say when he stood up for prayer: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhabi Jahannama wa min 'adhabil-qabri wa fitnatil-ghina wa fitnatil-faqri.' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of Hell, and from the punishment of the grave, and from the trial of wealth, and from the trial of poverty.) It was also narrated by Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to say after the Taslim (at the end of the prayer): 'Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan.' (O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, goodly provision, and deeds that are accepted.)
