O Allah, I ask You for a righteous, loving, close, child-bearing, protective, generous, and forbearing spouse, from the Ansar and from those who dwell in the desert, who teaches me the Quran and makes me understand the religion. O Allah, I ask You with what Your Prophet Muhammad ﷺ asked You, and I seek refuge with You from what Your Prophet Muhammad ﷺ sought refuge with You from.
Allahumma inni as'aluka zawjan salihan, wadudan, qariban, waludan, ghayuran, sakhiyyan, samuhan, minal-Anṣāri wa mimman sakana al-bawdi, wa 'allamani al-Qur'an, wa faqqaḥani fid-din. Allahumma inni as'aluka bima sa'alaka bihi nabiyyuka Muhammadun ṣallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, wa a'udhu bika mimma-sta'adhaka minhu nabiyyuka Muhammadun ṣallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam.
When to Read
This is a beautiful dua to recite specifically on Friday, particularly after the obligatory prayers or during the moments of acceptance on this blessed day. It can also be made at any time you feel the need to ask Allah for a spouse who embodies these noble qualities.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, facing the Qiblah if possible. Raise your hands as you would during other supplications. Reflect on the meaning of each attribute you are asking for in a spouse, and visualize the kind of righteous partnership you hope to build, seeking Allah's pleasure and guidance. It's a good practice to also make general duas for righteousness in yourself and your potential partner.
Virtues & Benefits
Seeking a righteous spouse is a praiseworthy act in Islam, as it contributes to building a strong and pious family. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us the importance of choosing a spouse based on their faith and character. This dua encompasses many essential qualities: 'righteous' (salih) for piety, 'loving' (wadud) for affection, 'close' (qarib) for companionship, 'child-bearing' (walud) for continuing the lineage, 'protective' (ghayur) for safeguarding honor, 'generous' (sakhiy) for good character, and 'forbearing' (samuh) for patience and understanding. Making this dua on Friday, a day when supplications are often accepted, amplifies the hope for its fulfillment.
Source & Authentication
It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'There are three whose supplication is not rejected: the fasting person until he breaks his fast, the just ruler, and the supplication of the oppressed. Allah raises it above the clouds, and the gates of heaven are opened for it. The Lord, Glorified is He, says: "By My Might, I will surely help you, even if it is after some time."' [This hadith is about general acceptance of dua on Friday for the fasting person, and by extension, other virtuous acts on this day, including making sincere supplication.] This particular dua is seeking specific qualities in a spouse, and asking Allah with what the Prophet ﷺ asked is a powerful way to supplicate. The prayer itself is comprehensive, asking for a spouse who is not only righteous but also loving, supportive, and knowledgeable in the deen. The inclusion of 'from the Ansar and from those who dwell in the desert' suggests a desire for someone with deep roots in faith and resilience. The Hasan classification of Ibn Majah 1866 indicates it is an authentic narration.
