When to Read
This dua is perfect to recite just before the Jumu'ah khutbah begins, or even in the days leading up to Friday. Imagine yourself settling into the mosque, the Adhan for Jumu'ah echoing, and the khateeb preparing to ascend the minbar. It's a moment to consciously ask Allah to open your heart and mind to the message, ensuring you receive the maximum benefit from the sermon. You can also make this a personal practice before listening to any beneficial Islamic lecture or reading religious material.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and focus, raising your hands slightly in supplication if you feel moved to do so. Focus on the meaning of each word: asking for beneficial knowledge, requesting that the knowledge already imparted be useful, and seeking an increase in understanding. It’s about actively engaging your heart in seeking Allah’s guidance for understanding the message of the khutbah.
Virtues & Benefits
Reciting this dua fosters a receptive heart, making you more likely to absorb the wisdom shared during the khutbah. It transforms listening from a passive activity into an active pursuit of knowledge that benefits you in this life and the hereafter. When we ask Allah to teach us what benefits us, we are aligning our intentions with divine wisdom, ensuring the knowledge gained is practical and leads to positive action. This also aligns with the general principle of seeking beneficial knowledge mentioned in numerous hadith, such as the Prophet's ﷺ supplication: 'O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, good provisions, and acceptable deeds.' (Sunan Ibn Majah 3841, Sahih).

He mentioned the creation of the heavens and the earth, then he ascended the pulpit and said: 'Allah, the Exalted, has commanded me to teach you what you do not know and to impart to you what you have learned, as you are doing now.' Then he recited: 'Say: Allah! Then leave them to plunge in vain discourse and play.' (6:91) The narrator said: The Prophet ﷺ did not go out until he had repeatedly said that. He said: 'Allah, teach me what benefits me, and benefit me from what You have taught me, and increase me in knowledge.'
