Glory be to Allah Who has subjected this (transportation) for us, and we could never have accomplished it on our own. And surely, to our Lord we are returning. O Allah, we ask You for righteousness and piety in our journey, and in our deeds that You deem pleasing. O Allah, make this journey easy for us, and make its distance short for us. O Allah, You are the Companion on the journey and the Guardian of the family. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardships of the journey, the sorrowful sight, and the evil turn in wealth and family.
Allahumma hawwin 'alayna safarana hadha watwi 'anna bu'dahu. Allahumma Antas-Sahibu fis-safari wal-khalifatu fil- ahli. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min wa'tha'is-safari wa ka'abatil-mandhari wa su'il-munqalabi fil-mali wal-ahli.
When to Read
This powerful dua is recited when embarking on any journey, especially significant ones. Reciting it on a Friday adds a layer of blessedness, as Friday (Jumu'ah) is a highly auspicious day in Islam. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this dua to seek Allah's protection and facilitation for our travels, covering physical safety, spiritual well-being, and the protection of our families and property left behind.
How to Read
It is best recited upon mounting one's transport, whether it be a car, train, plane, or even a boat. One should say it with sincerity and conviction, fully trusting in Allah's power and mercy. The first part, 'Subhanalladhi sakhkhara lana hadha...', is a declaration of Allah's greatness and His control over all things. The subsequent parts are direct supplications for the journey's success and protection from its potential adversities. Making eye contact with your travel companions (if any) while reciting can foster a shared sense of reliance on Allah.
Virtues & Benefits
Reciting this dua offers comprehensive protection for the traveler. It acknowledges Allah's sovereignty, seeking His pleasure and ease during the journey. It specifically asks for refuge from the difficulties of travel, unpleasant sights, and any negative consequences that might affect one's family or possessions. The timing on Friday amplifies the potential for acceptance, as it is a day blessed with special mercies.

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to say when he set out on a journey: 'Allah is the Greatest. (O Allah) I seek glory from Your oneness, I seek protection from Your wrath, I seek refuge in You from deviating or being led astray, or slipping or causing others to slip, or being unjust or being dealt with unjustly, or being ignorant or being treated with ignorance. (O Allah) I seek refuge in You from the hardships of the journey and the sorrowful sight on returning to the family and property.' And when he returned, he used to recite these words and add: 'We are returning repentant, worshipping, praising our Lord, and performing our Salat.'
