Seeking Tranquility Amidst Doubt and Fear: A Dua from the Sunnah

Fear
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6369

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow, I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the overwhelming of debt and the subjugation of men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijali.

When to Read

Recite this dua when you feel overwhelmed by spiritual doubts, anxieties about your faith, or the fear of falling short. It's particularly potent when these feelings are accompanied by a sense of helplessness or a desire to withdraw, which can stem from lingering worry or sadness.

How to Read

With sincerity and a focused heart, turn to Allah (SWT). Raise your hands as you would in supplication, and recite this dua with earnestness. Reflect on each aspect you are seeking refuge from, acknowledging your reliance on Allah for strength and steadfastness. It's best recited in the morning and evening, as this was the Prophet's ﷺ practice with many comprehensive duas.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful supplication, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself, offers comprehensive protection against a range of afflictions that can destabilize our inner peace. By seeking refuge in Allah from distress (hamm) and sorrow (hazan), we address the root of many anxieties, including spiritual doubts. The mention of incapacity ('ajz) and laziness (kasal) helps combat the inertia that can set in when faith wavers. Seeking refuge from cowardice (jubn) and stinginess (buhl) strengthens our resolve and our willingness to act for the sake of Allah, even when it's difficult. Finally, protection from overwhelming debt and the subjugation of men acknowledges worldly pressures that can add to spiritual burdens.
