O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the passing away of Your blessings, and from the change of Your protection, and from the suddenness of Your punishment, and from all Your displeasure. And I seek refuge in You from the evil of character, deeds, and desires.
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa fuja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik, wa a'udhu bika min munkaratil akhlaqi wal a'mal wal ahwa'.
When to Read
This comprehensive dua is particularly relevant when feeling anxious about straying from the straight path, including the fear of falling into bid'ah. Recite it during your daily supplications, especially after salah or in the morning and evening remembrance.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, raising your hands as you would for other supplications. Understand the meaning of each phrase you utter and reflect on your reliance on Allah for guidance and protection. It is a supplication for all-encompassing protection from spiritual and moral decay.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua offers refuge from the loss of divine favors, the reversal of well-being, and the sudden grip of divine punishment. Crucially, it explicitly seeks protection from 'munkarat al-akhlaq wal-a'mal wal-ahwa'' – the detestable of character, deeds, and desires. This covers deviations in practice and belief, including innovations (bid'ah) which are often born from misguided desires and actions that stray from the Sunnah.
Source & Authentication
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to seek refuge in Allah with these words: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa fuja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik, wa a'udhu bika min munkaratil akhlaqi wal a'mal wal ahwa'. (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the passing away of Your blessings, and from the change of Your protection, and from the suddenness of Your punishment, and from all Your displeasure. And I seek refuge in You from the evil of character, deeds, and desires.) (Sunan Abi Dawud 1549 - graded Hasan by many scholars)
