Seeking Allah's Protection from the Fear of Ill-Repute

Fear
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2706

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the passing away of Your favors, and from the change of Your protection, and from the sudden punishment, and from all Your displeasure. And I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow. And I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness. And I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess. And I seek refuge in You from being overcome by debt and from the oppression of men. O Allah, I ask You for steadfastness in all affairs, and determination in guiding to the right path. And I ask You to enable me to be grateful for Your favors, and to worship You in the best way. And I ask You for a sound heart and a truthful tongue. And I ask You for the good of what You know, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of what You know. And I seek Your forgiveness for what You know, for You are the Knower of all unseen things.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa fuj'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik. Wa a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazan. Wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasal. Wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-buhl. Wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahri ar-rijal. Allahumma inni as'alukath-thabata fil-amr, wal-'azeemata 'alar-rushd, wa as'aluka shukra ni'matik, wa husna 'ibadatik, wa as'aluka qalban saleeman, wa lisaanan saadiqan. Wa as'aluka min khairi ma ta'lam, wa a'udhu bika min sharri ma ta'lam, wa astaghfiruka lima ta'lam, innaka anta 'allamul-ghuyoob.

When to Read

This is a comprehensive dua that can be recited at any time, but it is particularly beneficial to recite it in the morning and evening, as taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It's a powerful supplication to invoke when feeling anxious about one's reputation, societal standing, or the fear of being judged or spoken ill of. Recite it when you feel a sense of unease about how others perceive you, or when facing situations that might lead to public scrutiny.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and full conviction in Allah's power to protect and provide. Raise your hands as you begin, as is the etiquette of dua, and face the Qiblah if possible. Reflect on the meaning of each phrase, understanding that true peace and security come only from Allah. Repeat the phrases you seek refuge in for emphasis. After reciting, continue to supplicate for your specific needs, trusting that Allah hears and will respond in the best way.

Virtues & Benefits

This profound dua encompasses seeking refuge from various forms of harm, both worldly and spiritual. Specifically, it addresses the fear of ill-repute implicitly within the seeking of refuge from 'distress and sorrow' (al-hammi wal-hazan), which can stem from such anxieties. It also seeks protection from being 'overcome by debt and the oppression of men' (ghalabatid-dayni wa qahri ar-rijal), which can lead to humiliation and a tarnished reputation. By asking for 'steadfastness in all affairs' and 'determination in guiding to the right path,' one aligns themselves with actions that build a good character and reputation pleasing to Allah, thus mitigating the fear of negative societal judgment. It is a comprehensive shield against anxieties that plague the heart, fostering inner peace and reliance on Allah alone.
