Fear
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2721

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْهُدَى وَالتُّقَى وَالْعَفَافَ وَالْغِنَى

O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and richness.

Allahumma inni as'alukal-huda wat-tuqa wal-'afafa wal-ghina

When to Read

Recite this dua whenever you feel overwhelmed by the fear of falling into temptation, whether it's related to desires, doubts, or harmful influences. It's particularly beneficial in the morning and evening, as the Prophet ﷺ taught us to seek Allah's protection at the start and end of the day. When facing a specific situation that tempts you, pause, remember Allah, and make this dua.

How to Read

With sincere intention and conviction, raise your hands (if possible) and supplicate to Allah. Focus on the meaning of each word: guidance to the right path, piety to fear Him, chastity to remain pure, and richness not just in wealth, but in contentment and self-sufficiency, which protects one from neediness and temptation stemming from desperation. Believe that Allah is the only one who can grant you these essential qualities.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua encapsulates the best that a believer can ask for regarding spiritual and worldly well-being, directly addressing the root of resisting temptation. Guidance (Huda) illuminates the path of righteousness, making it clear what to do and what to avoid. Piety (Tuqa) instills the consciousness of Allah, making one mindful of His presence and His commandments, thus deterring sin. Chastity ('Afaf) safeguards one's honor and purity, protecting against illicit desires. Richness (Ghinā) refers to contentment and self-sufficiency, which alleviates the need to resort to unlawful means or succumb to temptations born of poverty or desperation. The Prophet ﷺ described this as a request for the best that a person can be asked for (Sahih Muslim 2721).

Narrated Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ supplicated: 'Allahumma inni as'alukal-huda wat-tuqa wal-'afafa wal-ghina' (O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and richness).
