Dua for Seeking Refuge from Allah's Wrath (World & Hereafter)

Fear
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5074

O Allah, I ask You for well-being in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in my religion, my worldly affairs, my family, and my property. O Allah, conceal my faults and calm my fears. O Allah, protect me from before me and from behind me, from my right and from my left, and from above me, and I seek refuge in Your Magnificence from being struck from beneath me.

Allahumma inni as'alukal 'afiyata fid-dunya wal-akhirah. Allahumma inni as'alukal 'afwa wal-'afiyata fi dini wa dunyaaya wa ahli wa maali. Allahumma-stur 'awraati wa aamin raw'aati. Allahumma-hfadni min bayni yadayya wa min khalfi, wa 'an yameeni wa 'an shimaali, wa min fawqi, wa a'udhu bi-'azamatika an ughtala min tahti.

When to Read

This is a comprehensive dua that can be recited at any time. It's particularly beneficial to make it a habit during the morning and evening supplications (Adhkar as-Sabah wa al- المساء) and after completing the obligatory prayers. Imagine the Prophet ﷺ, who was free from sin, constantly turning to Allah for protection and well-being. This should inspire us to do the same, especially when we feel the weight of our responsibilities or the immensity of Allah's justice.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and focus, understanding that you are directly asking the Creator of the heavens and earth for protection. Raise your hands as you would during supplication, facing the Qiblah if possible. Believe in the power of Allah's words and His ability to grant you the requested safety and peace. It is a plea for comprehensive safety, covering both spiritual and physical aspects of your life, in this world and the next.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates a deep yearning for Allah's complete 'Afiyah (well-being, safety, and protection). 'Afiyah is a precious gift, encompassing freedom from all forms of harm, illness, hardship, and trials, both in this life and the next. By asking for protection from 'behind me and from before me,' we are seeking refuge from past mistakes and future uncertainties. The plea to be protected from our right, left, above, and below covers all angles of potential harm. Seeking refuge in Allah's Magnificence ('Azamah) highlights the ultimate power and authority He holds over all creation, ensuring our safety under His divine care. This prayer is a shield against the wrath of Allah, not by negating His justice, but by seeking His mercy and covering, acknowledging our dependence on Him.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Abdullah ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): 'The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) never failed to supplicate in these words when he asked Allah for protection: "O Allah, I ask You for well-being in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in my religion, my worldly affairs, my family, and my property. O Allah, conceal my faults and calm my fears. O Allah, protect me from before me and from behind me, from my right and from my left, and from above me, and I seek refuge in Your Magnificence from being struck from beneath me."
