Dua for Seeking Allah's Protection from the Fear of Divine Punishment

Fear
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 588

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of Hellfire, and from the punishment of the grave, and from the trials of life and death, and from the evil of the trial of the Dajjal.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhabi Jahannama, wa min 'adhabi-l-qabri, wa min fitnati-l-mahya wa-l-mamat, wa min sharri fitnati-d-Dajjal.

When to Read

This is a comprehensive supplication that can be recited at any time, especially during the Tashahhud (the final sitting of the prayer) before the taslim (salutation). It's particularly beneficial to say this when you feel overwhelmed by the thought of Allah's justice or the consequences of your actions. Making it a regular part of your prayer routine helps in consistently seeking Allah's protection.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a sincere heart, truly feeling the need for Allah's protection. It is best to recite it after the Tashahhud, just before concluding the prayer with the taslim. Maintaining a state of purity (wudu) while praying is recommended.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates seeking protection from some of the most severe trials and punishments, both in this life and the Hereafter. By asking Allah to shield us from the torment of Hellfire and the grave, and from the trials of this world and the deception of the Dajjal, we are acknowledging our weakness and dependence on His mercy. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this very comprehensive protection, demonstrating its immense value. It fosters a healthy fear of Allah (khashyah) which is a sign of true faith, motivating us to strive for righteousness without falling into despair.

Source & Authentication

‘Abdullah (bin Mas’ud) said: When we prayed with Allah’s Messenger ﷺ, we used to say: Peace be upon Allah (before His slaves), peace be upon Gabriel, peace be upon Michael, peace be upon so and so. (The wording of this narration is a bit different). One day Allah’s Messenger ﷺ passed by us and we were saying: Peace be upon Allah (before His slaves), peace be upon Gabriel, peace be upon Michael, peace be upon so and so. So Allah’s Messenger ﷺ said: Allah is As-Salam (The One Who is Free from all Defects), so do not supplicate to Allah but rather say: Allahumma inni as'aluka min fadlik (O Allah, I beg of You from Your bounty). And when you sit for the final prayer (Tashahhud) say: Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhabi Jahannam, wa min 'adhabi-l-qabr, wa min fitnati-l-mahya wa-l-mamat, wa min sharri fitnati-d-Dajjal (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of Hellfire, and from the punishment of the grave, and from the trials of life and death, and from the evil of the trial of the Dajjal).
