Dua for Relief from the Fear of Debt

Fear
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 4423

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and grief, I seek refuge in You from helplessness and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the overwhelming of debt and the subjugation of men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijali.

When to Read

This powerful dua is especially relevant when you feel the weight of debt pressing down on you, causing anxiety and fear. Recite it during times of stress, before embarking on a new financial endeavor, or simply as a regular practice to seek Allah's protection from such burdens.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction. Raise your hands in supplication as you do so, particularly when you feel overwhelmed by your financial situation. Remember that Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) responds to the call of His servant when he turns to Him with a sincere heart. It's also beneficial to accompany this dua with striving to find lawful means to settle your debts.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication directly addresses the crippling effects of debt, not just the financial aspect but also the mental and emotional toll. By seeking refuge in Allah from 'ghalabatid-dayn' (the overwhelming of debt), we are asking for His help in managing our financial obligations and preventing them from spiraling out of control. The mention of 'qahrir-rijal' (the subjugation of men) highlights how debt can lead to loss of dignity and respect, and this dua protects us from that as well.
