Fear
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 7302

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow, I seek refuge in You from helplessness and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from being overwhelmed by debt and by the oppression of men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhl, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijal

It's particularly effective when you're facing numerous tasks, deadlines, or difficult situations that seem insurmountable. You can also make it a regular part of your morning or evening remembrance to seek Allah's protection from such feelings.

How to Read

Raise your hands slightly as you recite, with sincerity and a firm belief in Allah's power to relieve your burdens. Focus on the meaning of each phrase, truly seeking Allah's refuge. It is best recited after the obligatory prayers or during times of quiet reflection. Imagine Allah's support surrounding you as you utter the words.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful dua, taught by our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, directly addresses the common feelings of being overwhelmed. By seeking refuge in Allah from distress (hamm) and sorrow (hazan), you acknowledge that true relief comes from Him. Asking for protection from helplessness ('ajz) and laziness (kasal) empowers you to take the necessary actions, knowing Allah will assist you. Seeking refuge from cowardice (jubn) and stinginess (buhl) helps in building character for facing challenges and being generous. Finally, seeking refuge from being overwhelmed by debt (ghalabatid-dayn) and the oppression of men (qahrir-rijal) covers major external stressors that can lead to feeling swamped. It is a comprehensive plea for inner strength and external ease.
