Dua for Protection from the Fear of Poverty

Fear
Sahih HadithSunan An-Nasa'i 5473

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from poverty, scarcity, and humiliation. And I seek refuge in You from wronging others or being wronged.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-faqri wal-qillati wadh-dhillah, wa a'udhu bika an adhlima aw uzlama.

When to Read

This dua is comprehensive and can be recited at any time, but it is particularly fitting to make it part of your supplications after salah, during the blessed times like the last third of the night, or when you feel a whisper of anxiety about your livelihood. It addresses not just material poverty but also scarcity in blessings and the potential for humiliation, which are all interconnected.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a full heart, truly seeking Allah's protection. Raise your hands as you would in supplication. Focus on the meaning of each word: seeking refuge (`a'udhu`) in Allah means to seek His protection and sanctuary. It's important to trust in Allah's provision (`rizq`) while making these efforts, as this dua is a means to ward off negative states, not an excuse to abandon striving.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful dua encompasses protection from several afflictions that can weigh heavily on a person: * **Poverty (الفَقْرِ - al-faqr):** The state of lacking essential needs. * **Scarcity (الْقِلَّةِ - al-qillah):** This can refer to a lack of wealth, but also a scarcity of blessings, support, or opportunities. * **Humiliation (الذِّلَّةِ - adh-dhillah):** The feeling of being disgraced or degraded, which can stem from poverty or other circumstances. Seeking refuge from this protects one's dignity. * **Wronging others (أَنْ أَظْلِمَ - an adhlima):** This asks protection from becoming someone who oppresses or harms others, a state often linked to desperation or a lack of spiritual grounding. * **Being wronged (أَوْ أُظْلَمَ - aw uzlama):** This asks protection from being a victim of injustice, which can cause immense suffering and distress. By reciting this, we actively seek Allah's shield against these detrimental states, asking for a life of dignity, provision, and justice.

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to supplicate frequently with these supplications: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jumbni wal-bukhl, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijal.' And he used to say: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-faqr, wa a'udhu bika min qillatid-dakhl, wa a'udhu bika min dhillatidh-dhull wal-faqr.' And he said: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min a'shara-shara, wa a'udhu bika min khamsata-shara, wa a'udhu bika min khams wa khamsin.' (The narrator) Anas said: And he used to supplicate: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-faqr wal-qillati wadh-dhillah, wa a'udhu bika an adhlima aw uzlama.' — Sunan An-Nasa'i 5473
