O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of the Dajjal, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of life and death. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from sin and debt.
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhab il-qabr, wa a'udhu bika min fitnat id-dajjal, wa a'udhu bika min fitnat il-mahya wal-mawat. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-mathami wal-maghram.
When to Read
This dua is particularly recommended to be recited after the Tashahhud in the final sitting of the prayer, before giving the salam. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would consistently make this supplication. It's also beneficial to make it at other times when reflecting on one's faith and seeking divine protection.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincere intention and a heartfelt plea to Allah. Focus on the meaning of seeking refuge from these trials and burdens. It's a personal conversation with your Creator, so speak from the heart. The Prophet ﷺ's consistent practice shows the importance he placed on these specific points of seeking refuge.
Virtues & Benefits
By seeking refuge in Allah from the trial of hypocrisy (Nifaq), which is often intertwined with the trials of life and death, we are asking for protection against internal spiritual decay and external temptations. While this specific wording doesn't directly mention 'hypocrisy,' the Prophet ﷺ taught us to seek refuge from trials that can lead one astray, including those that might affect the sincerity of one's faith. The fear of hypocrisy stems from a desire for sincerity, and this dua addresses seeking refuge from profound spiritual dangers. Protecting oneself from the punishment of the grave and the trials of Dajjal are also paramount for a believer's ultimate success, and a sincere heart free from hypocrisy is a cornerstone of that success.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to teach us to seek refuge in Allah from the punishment of the grave, from the punishment of the Hellfire, from the trial of the Dajjal, and from the trial of life and death. He also used to teach us to say: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from sin and debt.' Someone said: 'O Allah's Messenger, why do you so often seek refuge from debt?' He said: 'A person when he is in debt tells lies and breaks his promises, although he is poor and has a shaking body.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 833)
