Fear
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6347

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardship of affliction, the attainment of wretchedness, the evil of decree, and the rejoicing of enemies. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the demise of Your blessings, the change of Your protection, the suddenness of Your punishment, and all of Your displeasure.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min jahdil-bala', wa darakish-shaqa', wa su'il-qada', wa shamatatil-a'da'. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa fuja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, focusing on the meaning of the words. Raise your hands in supplication as you would in other duas, turning towards the Qiblah if possible. Picture Allah's protection surrounding you as you ask for His refuge. Take a moment to breathe deeply and trust in His plan.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive supplication covers a broad spectrum of seeking refuge in Allah. By asking for protection from the hardship of affliction, the attainment of wretchedness, and the evil of decree, we are seeking Allah's shield against the worst outcomes of life's tests. The second part, seeking refuge from the change of well-being, the suddenness of His wrath, and all forms of His displeasure, highlights our dependence on Allah for continued safety and contentment. This can significantly ease the burden of social anxiety by reminding us that our ultimate safety and peace come from Allah, not from the approval or reactions of others. It shifts the focus from fear of people to reliance on the All-Powerful.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to seek refuge in Allah from the hardships of life, tribulation, evil fate, and the malice of enemies. He would also seek refuge in Allah from the loss of blessings, the change of well-being, the suddenness of His punishment, and all His displeasure. This dua is found in multiple narrations, highlighting its importance to the Prophet (peace be upon him) in seeking comprehensive divine protection. Narrated Al-Nu'man bin Bashir: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, 'The supplication is worship.' Then he recited: '...And your Lord says: 'Call on Me; I will answer you.' (25:60)' (40:60).
