Fear
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 1539

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the disappearance of Your blessings, and the change of Your protection, and the suddenness of Your punishment, and all of Your displeasure. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from knowledge that does not benefit, and from a heart that is not humble, and from a soul that is not satisfied, and from a prayer that is not answered. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from destruction, and downfall, and drowning, and burning, and extreme old age, and misguidance, and loss, and corruption, and humiliation, and disgrace. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, and from the punishment of the Fire, and from the trial of the grave, and from the trial of wealth, and from the evil of the trial of poverty. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of what has been said and what has not been said, and from the evil of what I know and what I do not know. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of all Your creation. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of Satan and his deeds, and from the evil day, and from the evil night, and from the evil hour, and from the evil beast. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from being led astray or leading astray, from slipping or causing to slip, from wronging or being wronged, from acting ignorantly or being acted upon ignorantly. O Allah, place me within Your fortified armor which You place within it whomever You will.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, is excellent to recite regularly, especially during times of reflection, such as after salah, before sleeping, or in the morning and evening. The mention of 'haramin' (extreme old age) within its comprehensive scope directly addresses fears associated with aging, including the potential for loss of faculties and being forgotten.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and deep contemplation of its meaning. Ensure you are in a state of purity if possible, facing the Qiblah, and raising your hands as the Prophet ﷺ did when making dua. Focus on seeking Allah's protection from all forms of harm and hardship, both physical and spiritual, including the specific fears related to old age.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a powerful shield against a vast array of evils and hardships. It encompasses seeking refuge from the decline of blessings, the loss of well-being, sudden calamities, and Allah's displeasure. It specifically seeks protection from mental and spiritual decay (knowledge that doesn't benefit, heart that isn't humble), existential anxieties (unsatisfied soul, unanswered prayer), physical decay (destruction, drowning, burning, extreme old age), societal ills (misguidance, loss, corruption, humiliation), and the torments of the grave and hellfire. By reciting this, one actively invokes Allah's protection over their life, especially during the vulnerable stages of old age, preventing the fear of being forgotten or becoming a burden.
