Dua for Protection from the Fear of Being Alone in a Strange Land

Fear
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6306

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the cessation of Your blessings, the reversal of Your protection, the suddenness of Your punishment, and all of Your displeasure. I seek refuge in You from the trials of the grave, and I seek refuge in You from the trials of wealth, and I seek refuge in You from the trials of poverty, and I seek refuge in You from the trials of the Dajjal. O Allah, cleanse my heart with water, snow, and hail. Purify me from my sins as a white garment is purified from dirt. And distance me from my sins as far as You have distanced the East and the West.

When to Read

This powerful supplication is a comprehensive plea for protection, highly relevant when you feel vulnerable, perhaps when traveling to a new place, feeling isolated, or facing unfamiliar challenges. It's particularly beneficial to recite it in the morning and evening, as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to seek refuge in Allah from various evils and trials.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and a humble heart. Focus on the meaning of each phrase as you utter it. Raising your hands slightly, as was the practice of the Prophet ﷺ when making dua, can enhance the feeling of earnest supplication. Take your time with each request, truly reflecting on your need for Allah's protection and purification.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua offers immense benefits by seeking Allah's refuge from tangible and intangible dangers: the loss of blessings, health, and well-being; the trials of the grave and the unseen world (like the Dajjal); and the tests associated with wealth and poverty. It also encompasses a profound request for spiritual purification, asking Allah to cleanse our hearts and keep us distant from sin, much like the vast distance between the East and West. It provides a sense of security and peace, knowing that one is under Allah's care, especially in vulnerable situations.

Source & Authentication

‘Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: The Prophet (ﷺ) used to supplicate: "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the cessation of Your blessings, the reversal of Your protection, the suddenness of Your punishment, and all of Your displeasure. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the trials of the grave, and I seek refuge in You from the trials of the wealthy, and I seek refuge in You from the trials of the poor, and I seek refuge in You from the trials of the Dajjal. O Allah, cleanse my heart with water, snow, and hail, and cleanse my heart from sin as a white garment is cleansed from dirt, and keep me away from my sins as You have kept away the East and the West, and O Allah, help me against the evil desires, and make me firm in the affair (of guidance), and grant me the right guidance, and make me pleased with what is decreed for me." He said, 'Aishah, and when I am supplicating, I mean what I say.'
