Dua for Courage When Facing a Terrifying Dream

Fear
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2708

In the name of Allah. I seek refuge in the Lord of the dawn from the evil of all that He has created, and from the evil of the night as it falls, and from the evil of those who practise sorcery when they blow on knots, and from the evil of the envier when he envies.

Bismillahi, a'udhu birabbil falaqi, min sharri ma khalaqa, wa min sharri ghasiqin idha waqaba, wa min sharri n-naffathati fil 'uqadi, wa min sharri hasidin idha hasada.

When to Read

When you wake up from a terrifying dream, feeling scared or disturbed. This dua is particularly useful for seeking Allah's protection against the potential harm or distress the dream might cause, and for finding inner peace and courage.

How to Read

Upon waking from a frightening dream, you should first spit (dryly, without saliva) to your left three times. Then, recite this dua. It's also recommended to seek refuge in Allah by saying 'A'udhu billahi minash shaitanir rajeem' (I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan). Turn over to your other side, or get up and pray if you wish, as this will help dispel the fear and the effect of the dream.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua, which is Surah Al-Falaq from the Quran, offers powerful protection. By reciting it, you are directly calling upon Allah, the Lord of the dawn, to shield you from all kinds of manifested and hidden evils, including those that might manifest through disturbing dreams. It reassures the believer that ultimate refuge is with Allah, fostering courage and tranquility when faced with fear.

Fatimah bint Qais (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: I went to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, the Dajjal has deceived people." He said: "I shall describe to you something which will suffice you amongst people. Abdullah ibn Mas'ud narrated: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'When any one of you sees a dream that he dislikes, he should not tell it to anyone, but he should get up and pray, and recite: **Bismillahi, a'udhu birabbil falaqi, min sharri ma khalaqa, wa min sharri ghasiqin idha waqaba, wa min sharri n-naffathati fil 'uqadi, wa min sharri hasidin idha hasada** (In the name of Allah. I seek refuge in the Lord of the dawn from the evil of all that He has created, and from the evil of the night as it falls, and from the evil of those who practise sorcery when they blow on knots, and from the evil of the envier when he envies).'" This hadith is found in Sahih Muslim (2708) with slight variations in wording in different narrations, but the essence remains the same. The instruction to recite Surah Al-Falaq is a specific remedy for fear arising from disturbing dreams.
