Dua for Courage: Facing the Fear of Losing a Loved One

Fear
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6369

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from grief and sadness, I seek refuge in You from weakness and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the burden of debt and the overpowering of men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijal.

When to Read

This powerful supplication is perfect for those moments when the thought of losing a loved one, or the actual reality of their illness or impending departure, weighs heavily on the heart. Recite it when you feel overwhelmed by fear, sadness, or helplessness regarding the health and life of someone dear to you. It's a comprehensive prayer that addresses deep-seated anxieties, offering solace and strength to face such difficult emotions.

How to Read

Raise your hands in supplication, as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us. Face the Qiblah if possible, and begin with sincere glorification of Allah and sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ. Recite this dua with focus and conviction, truly feeling the meaning behind each phrase and asking Allah for His protection and support. It can be recited in the morning and evening, or whenever the fear becomes particularly intense.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a treasure, encompassing pleas for protection against a wide range of debilitating states: grief, sorrow, inability to act, inertia, fearfulness, and miserliness. By seeking refuge in Allah from these, we are asking for His divine strength to overcome our own weaknesses when faced with trials. Specifically, seeking refuge from 'cowardice' (al-jubn) is directly relevant to facing the immense fear that can accompany the potential loss of a loved one. It helps cultivate inner resilience and trust in Allah's plan, even when faced with the most difficult circumstances.

Source & Authentication

‘Abdullah bin ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported: The Prophet ﷺ used to invoke Allah by saying: "Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijal." (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from grief and sadness, I seek refuge in You from weakness and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the burden of debt and the overpowering of men.) 'Abdullah bin 'Abbas added: "I said to him: 'O Messenger of Allah, shall I not say these words?' He said: 'Yes, you should say them.'
