Seeking Refuge in Allah's Words from the Evil Eye

Evil Eye & Hasad
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2708

أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ.

I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created.

A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq.

When to Read

This powerful supplication is a shield against any harm, including the malicious intent behind the evil eye. It is recommended to recite it in the morning and evening, three times each, as a general protection. If you feel a person's gaze is causing you distress or ill effect, you can recite this dua specifically to ward off that harm.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and firm belief in Allah's power to protect. It is meant to be said from the heart, seeking Allah's absolute refuge. You can place your hand on the area of pain or discomfort if the evil eye has manifested physically, though the dua itself is a potent spiritual defense.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a comprehensive protection granted by Allah. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught it as a means to seek refuge from all sorts of evils created by Allah. By reciting it, we acknowledge Allah's sovereignty and His ability to shield us from harm, including the envy and ill will that can be transmitted through the evil eye.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and said: "We used to suffer from the evil eye in the world, and a man would bathe himself (to remove its effect). We used to apply rouge to the bride. Then we were prohibited from that. He said: 'There is nothing to that effect after the obligatory prayer.' Then he said: 'O Allah, Lord of the people, remove the distress, heal him and You are the Shafi', there is no healing except Your healing, a healing that leaves no disease.' (Sahih Muslim 2191). And it was narrated that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to seek refuge with Allah from the jinn and the evil eye until two surahs (Al-Falaq and An-Nas) were revealed. When they were revealed, he took to reciting them and abandoned all else. (Sahih al-Bukhari 5016). The dua 'A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq' is taught as a general form of seeking refuge. It is attributed to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ seeking refuge for Hasan and Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them).
