Dua for Protection from the Evil Eye When Giving or Receiving Advice

Evil Eye & Hasad
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5089

In the name of Allah, I seek refuge in Allah from the evil of my own self and from the evil of Satan and his association (or his snares), and from my bringing evil upon myself or bringing it upon any Muslim.

Bismillahi, a'udhu billahi min sharri nafsi wa min sharri sh-shaytani wa shirkih, wa an aqtarifa soo'an 'ala nafsi aw aruddahu 'ala muslimin.

When to Read

This powerful dua is particularly relevant when you are offering advice to someone, fearing that your words might inadvertently be affected by the evil eye (hasad) or lead to negative consequences. It's also beneficial when receiving advice, to shield yourself from any potential ill effects. Recite it before or after offering counsel, or when you feel a sense of unease about a situation involving advice.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and full reliance on Allah. It is recommended to raise your hands slightly while reciting, as is common with many supplications. Focus on the meaning and the protection Allah offers through these words.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates seeking Allah's protection against two primary dangers: the evil within oneself (nafs) and external influences like Satan. Specifically in the context of advice, it guards against the speaker inadvertently causing harm through envy or poor intention, and also protects the listener from any negative impact. It fosters humility and acknowledges our absolute dependence on Allah for all good outcomes.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught this dua. The context relates to seeking refuge from one's own shortcomings and external evils, which can manifest subtly in our interactions, including giving advice. It's a comprehensive plea for protection before embarking on actions or speech that could potentially affect oneself or others.
