Evil Eye & Hasad
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5081

In the name of Allah, I seek refuge in Allah from the evil of myself and the evil of Satan and his associates, and from bringing evil upon myself or inflicting it upon a Muslim.

Bismillahi, a'udhu billahi min sharri nafsi wa sharri sh-shaytani wa shirkih, wa an aqtarifa 'ala nafsi su'an aw ajurrahu ila muslim.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful supplication invokes Allah's protection against inner evils (our own shortcomings and desires) and external evils (Satan and his traps). By seeking refuge in Allah, we shield ourselves from bringing harm to ourselves or unintentionally causing harm to fellow Muslims, which is especially important when engaging with knowledge that can influence others. This protection extends to safeguarding our learning process from distractions, doubts, and the negative impacts of envy or ill-will directed towards us.

Source & Authentication

The narration from Sunan Abi Dawud states: 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to teach us the Tashahhud, and then teach us a dua to say: "Bismillahi, a'udhu billahi min sharri nafsi wa sharri sh-shaytani wa shirkih, wa an aqtarifa 'ala nafsi su'an aw ajurrahu ila muslim." (In the name of Allah, I seek refuge in Allah from the evil of myself and the evil of Satan and his associates, and from bringing evil upon myself or inflicting it upon a Muslim.)
