In the name of Allah, with whose name nothing harms on earth nor in the heavens, and He is the Hearing, the Knowing.

Source & Authentication

Usman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever says: 'Bismillahil-ladhi la yadhurru ma'asmihi shay'un fil-ardi wa la fis-sama'i wa huwas-Samee'ul-'Aleem' (In the name of Allah, with whose name nothing harms on earth nor in the heavens, and He is the Hearing, the Knowing) three times in the morning, will not be afflicted by any sudden calamity until the morning." Usman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 'Banu Usban had been stricken by a calamity and so I started to sit with them (to console them). The Prophet (peace be upon him) passed by me and said: 'What makes you sit here?' I said: 'A calamity has befallen Banu Usban, so I came to console them.' He said: 'Would you like me to teach you words which you should say when you encounter such calamities?' He said: 'Yes.' Upon this he said: 'Say: Allahumma inni as'aluka al-'afwata wal-'afiyata fid-dunya wal-akhirah. Allahumma inni as'aluka al-'afwa wal-'afiyata fi deeni wa dunyaya wa ahli wa mali...' (O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in my religion, my worldly affairs, my family, and my property... ) I said: 'O Allah's Messenger, what is 'al-'afiyah'?' He said: 'It is to be safe from affliction, and 'al-'afwa' is to be safe from sins.' I said: 'O Allah's Messenger, teach me this (the first mentioned supplication). He said: 'Say: Bismillahil-ladhi la yadhurru ma'asmihi shay'un fil-ardi wa la fis-sama'i wa huwas-Samee'ul-'Aleem' three times in the morning and three times in the evening. It will suffice you from any affliction.'
