Dua for Protection Against the Evil Eye and Suspicion

Evil Eye & Hasad
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5086

In the name of Allah, I seek refuge in Allah from the evil of this world, the evil of Satan, the evil of the self, the evil of Satan, and the evil of every moving creature whose forelock is grasped by my Lord. Indeed, my Lord is on a straight path.

Bismillah, a'udhu billahi min sharri d-dunya wa sharri sh-shaytani wa sharri n-nafsi wa sharri sh-shaytani wa sharri kulli dabbatin ana akhidhu binasiyatiha, inna rabbi 'ala siratin mustaqim.

When to Read

This dua is profoundly useful for anyone feeling overwhelmed by negative thoughts, anxieties, or the suspicion that others might be wishing them ill, or when feeling the tangible effects of the evil eye (hasad). Reciting it in the morning and evening, as is the practice with many protection duas, can create a spiritual shield. It's also beneficial to recite when facing difficult situations or when feeling vulnerable to external negative influences.

How to Read

Begin by reciting Bismillah (In the name of Allah). Then, utter the full dua with sincerity and conviction, visualizing Allah's protection encompassing you. It's important to understand the meaning behind the words, focusing on your reliance on Allah (swt) for safety and guidance. This dua is often recited by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ when he felt troubled or sought protection, so emulating his practice with humility and trust is key.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive supplication invokes Allah's protection against a wide spectrum of evils: the transient evils of this world, the persistent whispers of Satan, the internal struggles with one's own lower self (nafs), and even the potential harm from creatures and unseen forces. By acknowledging that Allah (swt) has control over all things ('whose forelock is grasped by my Lord'), it instills a deep sense of trust and reliance, reminding us that ultimate power rests with Him, and He guides all matters to their rightful conclusion ('on a straight path').

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to seek refuge with Allah from the evil of what He created, until he would seek refuge with Him from the sting of a scorpion. And he would say: 'Bismillah, a'udhu billahi min sharri d-dunya wa sharri sh-shaytani wa sharri n-nafsi wa sharri sh-shaytani wa sharri kulli dabbatin ana akhidhu binasiyatiha, inna rabbi 'ala siratin mustaqim.' (Translation: In the name of Allah, I seek refuge in Allah from the evil of this world, the evil of Satan, the evil of the self, the evil of Satan, and the evil of every moving creature whose forelock is grasped by my Lord. Indeed, my Lord is on a straight path.)
