Seeking Allah's Protection from Envy and Malice

Evil Eye & Hasad
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 3893

I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from His anger and His punishment, and from the evil of His servants, and from the whispers of devils and from their presence.

A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min ghadabihi wa 'iqabihi, wa min sharri 'ibadihi, wa min hamazatish-shayateeni wa an yahdurun

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful dua, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to his companion Uthman ibn Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) when he complained of a sting he felt from an enemy, provides comprehensive protection. It encompasses seeking refuge from Allah's displeasure, the harm caused by other people, and the insidious whispers and presence of devils (Shayateen). By reciting this, we invoke the ultimate safeguard against both tangible and intangible threats that can disrupt our peace and well-being, especially in environments where such negativity might be present.

Source & Authentication

When Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) finished the prayer, he would say: 'I seek refuge in Allah the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing, from the accursed Satan, from his arrogance, his poetry, and his madness.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 6006). Another related narration for seeking refuge from evil: Uthman ibn Affan reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "There is no servant who says, in the morning of every day and the evening of every night: 'A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq' (I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of whatever He has created), but nothing will harm him until he gives up his prayer for the day." (Sahih Muslim 2708). The dua provided above is a more comprehensive version taught for seeking refuge from specific evils.
