Dua for Protection from the Evil Eye When Reading About Others' Successes

Evil Eye & Hasad
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5081

In the name of Allah, I seek refuge in Allah from the evil of my soul and the evil of Satan and his idolatry, and from bringing evil upon myself or dragging it to a Muslim.

Bismillahi, a'udhu billahi min sharri nafsi wa sharri sh-shaytani wa shirkih, wa an aqtarifa 'ala nafsi su'an aw ajurahu ila muslim

When to Read

When you encounter news of someone's success, wealth, or blessings – be it on social media, in person, or through other means – and feel a pang of envy or the potential for the evil eye to affect them or yourself. This dua is a shield against that.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and reflection. Start with 'Bismillah' to invoke Allah's name. Understand that you are seeking Allah's protection from internal shortcomings (your own soul's whispers) and external influences (Satan). Acknowledge that bringing harm to yourself or a fellow Muslim through envy or ill wishes is a grave matter.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive supplication offers protection from several dangers: the evil within oneself (envy, jealousy, negativity), the whispers and influence of Satan, and the potential to inflict harm upon oneself or another Muslim. By reciting it, one actively wards off the spiritual maladies that can arise from witnessing others' blessings, preserving one's own spiritual well-being and maintaining good relations within the community.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated that Abu al-Yasar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'Anyone who mentions Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, he should say: Bismillahi, a'udhu billahi min sharri nafsi wa sharri sh-shaytani wa shirkih, wa an aqtarifa 'ala nafsi su'an aw ajurahu ila muslim.' (In the name of Allah, I seek refuge in Allah from the evil of my soul and the evil of Satan and his idolatry, and from bringing evil upon myself or dragging it to a Muslim.)
