Dua for Protection from the Evil Eye When Entering Markets or Crowded Places

Evil Eye & Hasad
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2708

أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ

I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created.

A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq

When to Read

Recite this dua before or upon entering any place where you might be exposed to the evil eye, such as markets, crowded public transport, or large gatherings. It's particularly beneficial when you feel a sense of unease or susceptibility to envy and ill will.

How to Read

Recite this supplication sincerely, with focus and conviction in the power of Allah's words. It is typically recited once. Some scholars mention reciting it three times for added protection in certain situations, though the single recitation is the primary sunnah practice associated with this specific hadith.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua offers comprehensive protection from all forms of evil created by Allah, including the harmful effects of the evil eye (al-'ayn) and envy (hasad). By invoking the perfect words of Allah, we shield ourselves from potential harm that can stem from the admiration or ill will of others, which can manifest physically, emotionally, or spiritually. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself taught this dua as a means of safeguarding against dangers.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'Whoever says this dua three times in the morning will be protected from everything until the evening. And whoever says it three times in the evening will be protected from everything until the morning.' (Sahih Muslim 2708). While the hadith specifically mentions morning and evening recitation for general protection, the wording 'from the evil of what He has created' makes it directly applicable to seeking refuge from the evil eye, especially in potentially exposed environments like markets.
