Dua for Protection from the Evil Eye When Admiring Your Reflection

Evil Eye & Hasad
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6137

بَارَكَ اللَّهُ فِيكَ

May Allah bless you.

Barakallahu feek

When to Read

When you find yourself admiring your own appearance, possessions, or even that of others, to ward off any potential self-inflicted evil eye (by vanity) or if someone else is looking. It's a beautiful way to acknowledge that all blessings are from Allah and to seek His protection.

How to Read

Recite this phrase sincerely, acknowledging that any beauty or blessing you see is a gift from Allah. It's a form of gratitude and seeking His continued favor, preventing pride and protecting against envy (both given and received). It can be said silently or gently aloud.

Virtues & Benefits

This simple phrase redirects the focus from self-admiration or envy towards gratitude to Allah. It acts as a shield against the potential ill effects of the evil eye, which can stem from excessive pride or the admiration of others without a reminder of the Source. By attributing the blessing to Allah, we maintain humility and seek His protection over what we see.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "If you see something from your brother that you like, supplicate for him, asking Allah to bless him (for your doing so) is the best way to ward off the evil eye from him." In another narration: 'Abdullah bin Sa'ib (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that when the Prophet (ﷺ) was mentioned to Adam (a man in the chain of narration), he said, "May Allah bless him." This narration refers to a different context but shows the general usage of the phrase. However, the core principle of saying 'Barakallahu feek' when seeing something good applies broadly, including when seeing one's own reflection in a way that might lead to vanity.
