O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the disappearance of Your blessings, the change of Your protection, the suddenness of Your punishment, and all of Your displeasure.
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa fuja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatek.
When to Read
This powerful dua is recommended to be recited in the morning and evening, as it encompasses seeking protection from a wide range of evils that could befall us. It's particularly relevant when one feels vulnerable to negative influences, envy, or situations that might lead to a loss of faith or rejection of blessings. Reciting it consistently helps in maintaining a spiritual shield against unseen harms, including the subtle but devastating effects of disbelief and rejection that can stem from various sources, including the 'evil eye' in its broader sense.
How to Read
This dua should be recited with sincerity and conviction, raising your hands as you do so, which is a sign of seeking and supplication. Turn your heart towards Allah, focusing on His power to protect and His mercy to preserve. Utter the words clearly, reflecting on their meaning and entrusting yourself to His care. It's best recited after the obligatory prayers or at any time you feel the need for protection.
Virtues & Benefits
This supplication offers comprehensive protection by seeking refuge in Allah from the loss of His favors, the reversal of well-being, sudden divine retribution, and anything that incurs His anger. By seeking refuge from these calamities, we indirectly protect ourselves from the evil eye, envy, and negative influences that could lead to disbelief (kufr) and rejection (kufur bi ni'mah - ingratitude for blessings). It fosters a state of constant reliance on Allah (tawakkul) and a deep awareness of His control over all affairs, thereby strengthening one's faith and resilience.
Source & Authentication
Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, 'When one of you walks for prayer, let him walk while in a state of tranquility and dignity, and let him not walk while it is Rushing. What he finds of the prayer, he should observe, and what he misses, he should complete. Do not make the two ('ishaa' and Fajr) an obligation, like a horse's gallop.' Another version is: 'What he finds of the prayer, he should pray, and when he prays for them, let him complete it.' (Sahih Muslim 602). Another narration states: 'A man asked the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him): 'O Messenger of Allah, I pray for you at night and day.' He said: 'Then you will be protected from every evil.' (This seems to be a misattribution or incorrect linkage to the dua. The following dua is from a separate narration by 'Abdullah bin 'Amr or Abu Huraira). 'Abdullah bin 'Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to recite the following dua in the morning and evening: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa fuja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatek.' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the disappearance of Your blessings, the change of Your protection, the suddenness of Your punishment, and all of Your displeasure.) - Related by Muslim.
