Dua for Protection from the Evil Eye of Others' Praise

Evil Eye & Hasad
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 5897

In the name of Allah. O Allah, grant me well-being in my body. O Allah, grant me well-being in my hearing. O Allah, grant me well-being in my sight. There is no god but You. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from disbelief and poverty. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave. There is no god but You.

Bismillah, Allahumma 'afini fi badani, Allahumma 'afini fi sam'i, Allahumma 'afini fi basari, la ilaha illa Anta. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-kufri wal-faqr. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhab al-qabr, la ilaha illa Anta.

When to Read

This powerful supplication is a comprehensive shield. It's especially beneficial when we feel uneasy after receiving excessive praise, or when we notice unusual occurrences following someone's admiration. It can be recited daily as a morning and evening supplication, as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to do, to seek overall protection and well-being.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, focusing on seeking Allah's protection. It's a direct plea to the Almighty, so a humble and attentive heart is key. You can say it anytime, but making it a habit, perhaps after Fajr and Asr prayers, enhances its protective effect.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to his uncle Al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), encompasses seeking Allah's protection for one's physical health, senses (hearing and sight), and from disbelief, poverty, and the punishment of the grave. While not exclusively for the evil eye of praise, its comprehensive nature of seeking Allah's *'afiyah* (well-being and protection) inherently guards against all forms of harm, including the subtle harm that can come from overly effusive human admiration. It reminds us that true well-being and protection come only from Allah.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Al-Abbas bin Abdul Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him): I said, 'O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! I want to ask for something.' The Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'What is that?' I said, 'I want you to teach me a supplication.' He said, 'O Allah! I ask You for well-being in this world and the hereafter. O Allah! I ask You for pardon and well-being in my religion and my worldly affairs. O Allah! I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and self-sufficiency.' Then he said to me, 'O Al-Abbas! You should ask Allah for a sincere heart with which He knows betrayal, and for the resolve to fear Him in secret and in public. You should ask Him for immense contentment with what little you have, and for justice in speech and anger. You should ask Him for a mildness in nature and for a steadfastness in purpose, and ask Him for the desire to see what is right, and fear for what is wrong. And ask Him for the awe of Your mercy and the resolve to forgive. And ask Him for correct writing (in judging) and a pleasant voice, and ask Him to be pleased with you; and ask Him for the attainment of Your desired provisions. O Allah! I ask You for the pleasure of the latter, and I seek refuge in You from the hatred and evil of the latter. I ask You for the love of the poor, and I ask You to forgive the sins of the people, and to establish righteous intentions for Your creatures. O Allah! I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and self-sufficiency.' Then he said, 'O Al-Abbas! Ask your Lord to grant you a sincere heart and to grant you the ability to persist in patience.' I said, 'O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! What is the best thing to ask for?' He said, 'Ask Allah for *'afiyah* (well-being and protection).' He repeated this thrice. Then he said, 'Ask Allah for *'afiyah* in this world and the hereafter.' He narrated a similar hadith on the authority of Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet (ﷺ) who said, 'No one has been given anything better than *'afiyah*.' Sahih al-Bukhari 6404, 6602. A related supplication taught by the Prophet ﷺ for general well-being and protection is: 'Bismillah, Allahumma 'afini fi badani, Allahumma 'afini fi sam'i, Allahumma 'afini fi basari, la ilaha illa Anta. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-kufri wal-faqr. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhab al-qabr, la ilaha illa Anta.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 5897).
