Dua for Protection from the Evil Eye (Ayn)

Evil Eye & Hasad
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2708

أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ

I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created.

A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq

When to Read

This powerful dua can be recited at any time, but it is particularly beneficial to say it when you feel a sense of unease, when seeing something that might inspire envy in yourself or others, or when you are concerned about potential harm from the evil eye. It's also a good practice to say it regularly in the morning and evening as a general protection.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and full conviction in Allah's protection. You can whisper it to yourself or say it aloud. Some scholars mention that it's a Sunnah to blow into your hands and recite this dua (along with the Mu'awwidhatayn - Surah Al-Falaq and An-Nas) and then wipe over your body, as taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ for seeking protection. It's important to remember that this dua is a means, and ultimate protection comes only from Allah.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication is a profound shield against all forms of evil, including the notorious evil eye (al-ayn). The 'perfect words of Allah' encompass all His divine decree and protection. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself taught this dua, demonstrating its immense value. By seeking refuge in Allah's complete words, we acknowledge His ultimate power and our reliance on Him for safety from any harm, seen or unseen.

Narrated by Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, my brother has a pain in his stomach.' He said: 'Let him drink medicine, a potion of honey.' He came again and said: 'I have given him medicine but it has not helped him.' He said: 'Send him to him who has possession of the treasure of Islam (i.e., a physician) or send him to the one who has possession of Allah's command.' Then he said: 'I suggest that you should drink honey.' He came for the third time and said: 'I have given him honey, but it has not helped him.' The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Allah has not made a disease without appointing a cure for it. So drink honey, O slave of Allah.' The narrator said: 'So he gave him honey to drink and he was cured. And this is how the man was cured. It was narrated on the authority of Abu Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Seventy thousand of my Ummah will enter Paradise without being taken to account, and they are the ones who do not seek Ruqyah and do not believe in evil omens and do not use cauterization, but rather they place their trust in their Lord.' (Sahih Muslim 209). Another narration states that when the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ complained of illness, Jibril used to recite this dua for him and wipe him with his hand. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Whenever any one of you is complaining of something, let him wipe his hand over it and say: *Bismillah* (In the name of Allah), then say: *A'udhu bikalimatillah min sharri ma khalaq* (I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created) - seven times.' (Sunan Ibn Majah 3533, graded Hasan by some scholars).
