Evil Eye & Hasad
Sahih HadithBook of Dhikr, Supplication, Repentance and Seeking Forgiveness 2708

أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ

I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created.

A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq

When to Read

This profound dua is a shield against all forms of evil, including the insidious harm of envy (hasad). It's particularly potent when you feel a sense of unease, notice something negative happening, or fear the ill effects of someone's envious gaze. Recite it in the morning and evening, as the Prophet ﷺ taught us this is a means of protection. When faced with the jealousy of others, or when observing something that might attract envy, making this dua is a proactive step to safeguard your spiritual well-being and worldly blessings.

How to Read

Recite this dua three times in the morning and three times in the evening. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ mentioned that whoever says this three times in the morning will not be harmed by anything until evening, and whoever says it three times in the evening will not be harmed by anything until morning. It's best recited with sincere intention and conviction in Allah's power to protect. You can also recite it when you feel the sting of envy, either your own or directed towards you, blowing gently on yourself or onto your belongings.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a direct recourse to Allah's perfect words for protection. It encompasses refuge from *all* created evils, making it incredibly comprehensive. By seeking refuge in Allah's perfect words, you are acknowledging His absolute power and sovereignty over all creation, including the harmful effects of envy. This practice aligns with the Sunnah and is a practical way to invoke divine safeguarding against the spiritual and material damage that hasad can inflict, preserving the blessings Allah has bestowed upon you and allowing your spiritual growth to continue unimpeded.

Narrated Abu Huraira: A man came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said, 'O Allah's Messenger! I have been bitten by a scorpion last night.' He said: 'Had you recited the following words in the evening: A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq (I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created), nothing would have harmed you.' The narration has been added to this context as the Hadith explicitly mentions the effect of this dua against harm, which includes the harm caused by envy. The full hadith in Sahih Muslim concerning morning and evening recitation is 2708, which states: 'The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'Whoever supplicates in the morning: 'O Allah, I ask You for the good of this day and the good of what comes after it. I seek refuge in You from the evil of this day and the evil of what comes after it. O Allah, I ask You for Paradise and what draws me near to it from speech or action, and I seek refuge in You from the Hellfire and what draws me near to it from speech or action.' And when he suppliated in the evening, he would say the like of that.' And also: 'The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'There is no servant who says, in the morning of every day and the evening of every night: 'A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq' (I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created), and it does not harm him,.'
