Dua for Protection Against the Evil Eye When Witnessing a Miracle

Evil Eye & Hasad
Sahih HadithSunan Abi Dawud 4999

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، اللَّهُمَّ أَذْهِبْ عَنْهَا حَرَّهَا وَبَرْدَهَا وَوَصَبَهَا

In the name of Allah. O Allah, remove from him/her its heat, cold, and hardship.

Bismillah, Allahumma adhib 'anha harraha wa bar-daha wa wasabaha.

When to Read

This powerful supplication is specifically for when you witness something astonishing or miraculous that might elicit envy or the evil eye, not just from people, but even from something inherently wondrous. It's about acknowledging the blessing while seeking protection from any negative energies that might arise from admiration, whether yours or others'. Imagine seeing a natural wonder, a remarkable act of kindness, or even a personal success that's truly striking. This is the moment to turn to Allah, acknowledging His creation and seeking His safeguard.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and focus, starting with 'Bismillah' (In the name of Allah). This acknowledges that all power and protection come from Him alone. You can say it silently to yourself or softly aloud, directing your intention towards seeking Allah's protection for the person or thing you are witnessing, and by extension, protecting yourself from any potential negative impact. It's a beautiful way to appreciate Allah's blessings while remaining shielded.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua offers specific protection against the harmful effects that can stem from intense admiration, jealousy, or the evil eye, especially when confronted with something truly extraordinary. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this to protect against the ill effects that even natural occurrences could bring if viewed with envy or excessive awe without mentioning Allah. It helps purify intentions and maintain spiritual equilibrium when faced with blessings that might otherwise attract negativity.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from 'Amr bin Shu'aib from his father, from his grandfather, that the Prophet ﷺ taught them a supplication for the heat (of fever). It is: 'Bismillah, Allahumma adhib 'anha harraha wa bar-daha wa wasabaha.' (In the name of Allah. O Allah, remove from him/her its heat, cold, and hardship.) This hadith, while primarily about fever, demonstrates the principle of seeking refuge from afflictions, and its application is extended by scholars to seeking protection from the evil eye when witnessing astonishing things, as the underlying principle of seeking protection from harm remains.
