Evil Eye & Hasad
Sahih HadithSunan Abi Dawud 4026

What Allah wills, there is no power except with Allah. O Allah, bless it for me.

Mā shāʾ Allāh, lā quwwata illā billāh. Allāhumma bārik lī fīhi.

When to Read

This dua is recommended to be recited when you acquire or wear something new – be it clothing, a vehicle, or any other item. It's a way to acknowledge Allah's blessing and seek His protection from envy or the evil eye that might arise from the novelty of the possession.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction. The first part, 'Mā shāʾ Allāh, lā quwwata illā billāh,' is a declaration of belief in Allah's decree and power, deflecting any potential admiration that could turn into envy. The second part, 'Allāhumma bārik lī fīhi,' is a direct supplication for Allah's blessing upon the new item, ensuring it brings good and is protected from harm. It's a beautiful practice to express gratitude and seek divine safeguarding.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua when acquiring something new offers several blessings: It prevents envy and the evil eye from affecting the new item or its owner. It acknowledges that all blessings come from Allah (SWT), fostering humility and gratitude. It invokes Allah's barakah (blessing) into the new possession, ensuring it is used for good and brings benefit. This practice aligns with the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, teaching us to seek Allah's help and protection in all aspects of our lives.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Ibn ‘Abbas that the Prophet ﷺ said: 'If any one of you buys a slave or a servant, let him say: مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ لَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ (Mā shāʾ Allāh, lā quwwata illā billāh) And if he buys a horse, let him say: اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ خَيْرَهُ وَخَيْرَ مَا جُبِلَ عَلَيْهِ (Allāhumma innī asʾaluka khayrahu wa khayra mā jubila 'alayhi) And if he buys a camel, let him say: اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ خَيْرَهَا وَخَيْرَ مَا جُبِلَ عَلَيْهِ (Allāhumma innī asʾaluka khayrahā wa khayra mā jubila 'alayhi) And if he buys food, let him say: اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيهِ وَارْزُقْنَا خَيْرًا مِنْهُ (Allāhumma bārik lanā fīhi warzuqnā khayran minhu) And if he buys a riding animal, let him say: اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ خَيْرَهَا وَخَيْرَ مَا صُنِعَ لَهَا وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّهَا وَشَرِّ مَا صُنِعَ لَهَا (Allāhumma innī asʾaluka khayrahā wa khayra mā ṣuni'a lahā wa a'ūthu bika min sharrihā wa sharri mā ṣuni'a lahā) And if he buys anything else, let him say: اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لِي فِيهِ (Allāhumma bārik lī fīhi) This version is slightly longer and addresses different items, but the core dua for general items, 'Allāhumma bārik lī fīhi,' and the precautionary 'Mā shāʾ Allāh, lā quwwata illā billāh' are applicable. The scholars have noted the general applicability of the phrase "Mā shāʾ Allāh, lā quwwata illā billāh" when seeing something impressive.
