Evil Eye & Hasad
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2054

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّهَا وَشَرِّ مَا فِيهَا وَشَرِّ مَا أُوتِيتَ بِهِ

In the name of Allah. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of what is in it and the evil of what it has been brought with.

Bismil-lah, Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min sharriha wa sharri ma fiha wa sharri ma utiti bihi

When to Read

This dua is recommended to be recited when commencing any new endeavor, especially a business venture. It's particularly relevant when launching something new that might attract envy or the evil eye, acknowledging that all protection comes from Allah. Recite it before you officially open your doors, sign important contracts, or make your first sale.

How to Read

Recite this supplication with sincere intention and full reliance on Allah. It is best recited when entering the place of business or before engaging in the primary activity of the new venture. Place your right hand on your chest (or the threshold/desk) as you recite it, focusing your heart on seeking Allah's protection. It can be recited individually or by the business partners together.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful dua, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, offers comprehensive protection. It shields not only against the inherent dangers of a new venture but also from the unseen harms, including the evil eye and envy (hasad) that can be directed towards success. By seeking refuge in Allah, we acknowledge His power over all things and entrust our endeavors to His care, hoping for barakah (blessings) and safety.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas that the Prophet ﷺ said: When one of you seeks a new abode, he should say: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka khayraha wa khayra ahliha wa khayra ma fiha, wa a'udhu bika min sharriha wa sharri ahliha wa sharri ma fiha (O Allah, I ask You for its good and the good of its inhabitants and the good of what is in it, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of its inhabitants and the evil of what is in it). And when one of you seeks a mount (for riding), he should say the like of that. And when one of you enters a town or a village, he should say: 'Allahumma rabba samawati sab' wa ma athlala, wa rabba al-ardina wa ma aqallat, wa rabba ash-shayateeni wa ma adallat, kun li jarra min kulli shay'in hasad, 'aynin wa harasa min fadlik an yahrusani ahadun min khalaqika. Allahumma aj'alni fi darika al-amna min kulli shay'in wa 'afiyatuka fi sadri. (O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens and what they cast shade upon, Lord of the earths and what they carry, Lord of the devils and what they lead astray, be my neighbour from every thing, an eye, and a protector from your bounty lest anyone of Your creation guard me. O Allah, make me in Your protection, the safest from everything, and Your well-being in my chest).' [The specific phrasing for a new venture or abode is: "Bismil-lah, Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min sharriha wa sharri ma fiha wa sharri ma utiti bihi"]
