Dua for Protection Against the Evil Eye When Experiencing Self-Doubt

Evil Eye & Hasad
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2708

أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ

I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created.

A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq

When to Read

This powerful dua is especially relevant when you feel a wave of self-doubt creeping in, making you question your abilities or worth. It's also a potent shield against the evil eye (al-'ayn), which can manifest as unintended harm or misfortune from the envious or admiring glance of another. Recite it whenever you feel vulnerable, particularly before embarking on something important, when receiving praise that might lead to arrogance, or when sensing negativity around you.

How to Read

Recite this dua three times in the morning and three times in the evening. You can also recite it whenever you feel the need for protection or when you've been praised or have observed something that might invoke the evil eye. It's recommended to blow gently onto your hands after reciting and then wipe over your body as much as you can. This practice, taught by our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, combines the power of Allah's words with a physical act of seeking protection.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua offers comprehensive protection through the perfect, uncreated words of Allah (the Quran and Sunnah). The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself turned to Allah with these words when seeking refuge. Reciting it in the morning and evening is a Sunnah that brings immense blessings and safeguards you from various evils, including those stemming from envy and the evil eye, which are real and can affect individuals. It also strengthens your reliance on Allah (tawakkul), helping to dispel self-doubt by reminding you that your strength comes from Him.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'Whoever says this dua three times in the morning, will be protected from everything until the evening; and whoever says it three times in the evening, will be protected until the morning.' (Sahih Muslim 2708). In another narration, it is mentioned that the Prophet ﷺ used to seek refuge with Allah for Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them) saying: > **Arabic:** أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْطَانٍ وَهَامَّةٍ ، وَمِنْ كُلِّ عَيْنٍ لَامَّةٍ > **Translation:** 'I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from every devil and every beast, and from every evil eye.' > **Transliteration:** *A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min kulli shaytanin wa hāmmatin, wa min kulli 'ainin lāmmah* > > Then he would say: 'It was Allah's decree that every child was created with this.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 3371). The dua provided is a shortened version encompassing similar protection.
