Evil Eye & Hasad
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 544

بَارَكَ اللَّهُ فِيكَ

May Allah bless you

Barakallahu feek

When to Read

This dua is recited when you see something you find particularly impressive or beautiful – whether it's a person, an object, a home, or even a landscape. It's a way to express your admiration while simultaneously protecting yourself and the admired item from the potential harm of the evil eye (al-'ayn) or envy (hasad), which can occur unintentionally through excessive admiration.

How to Read

Recite this phrase sincerely when you notice something that strikes you as wonderful. The intention is to acknowledge Allah's creation and blessing, attributing the beauty to Him. You can say it aloud or silently to yourself. The accompanying gesture of placing the hand on one's own head or chest is also mentioned in some narrations as a sign of humility and dependence on Allah.

Virtues & Benefits

This simple yet profound dua serves multiple purposes: 1. **Protection from the Evil Eye:** It averts the potential negative impact of the evil eye, which can be cast even unintentionally by someone who admires something without invoking Allah's name. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said concerning the evil eye: "If any of you sees something from his brother that he likes, he should invoke Allah's blessings for it, for the evil eye is indeed true." (Sahih Muslim 2136) 2. **Attributing Blessings to Allah:** It redirects the admiration towards recognizing Allah's power and magnificence, preventing pride or envy from creeping in. 3. **Fostering Gratitude:** It encourages a constant state of gratitude by reminding us that all blessings originate from Allah.

Narrated Abu Umamah bin Sahl bin Hunaif: Sahl bin Hunaif performed Ghusl (bathing) at Al-Kharrar, which is a place in the vicinity of Medina. Sahl bin Hunaif was a handsome white-skinned man with good-looking hair. 'Amir bin Rabiah saw him while he was performing Ghusl and said to him, "I have not seen anything like what I have seen today—not the skin of a hidden pearl!" Sahl bin Hunaif fell to the ground [unconscious]. He was brought to the Prophet ﷺ and it was said to him, "Sahl bin Hunaif cannot regain his life." Allah's Messenger ﷺ asked, "Do you accuse anyone in this regard?" They said, "'Amir bin Rabiah saw him." So Allah's Messenger ﷺ called 'Amir and said angrily, "Why would any of you kill his brother? When you see something you like, you should invoke Allah's blessings for it." Then 'Amir got up and performed Wudu' (ablution) and then went to Sahl and started wiping Sahl's head and face with his hands and said, "O Allah, bless him in his family." Sahl's condition then became alright. On that, 'A'isha said, "O Allah's Messenger! Can anyone be safe from (the evil eye of) a believer?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "If anything could overcome destiny, it would be the evil eye. But if the semen of (a creature) is ejaculated, it is blessed, and that is the meaning of "Baraka".
