Dua for Protection Against the Evil Eye of Skepticism and Doubt

Evil Eye & Hasad
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2711

I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from His anger and His punishment, and from the evil of His creation, and from the whispers of the devils and their presence.

A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min ghadabihi wa 'iqabihi, wa min sharri 'ibadihi, wa min hamazatish-shayatin wa an yahdhurun.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua is particularly potent when you feel the weight of doubt creeping into your heart, making you question your faith or the blessings Allah has bestowed upon you. Recite it when you feel overwhelmed by negative thoughts, or when you sense external influences (like gossip or harsh criticism) that seek to undermine your confidence and spiritual well-being. It's a shield against subtle forms of the evil eye, not just physical ailments, but the 'evil eye' of cynicism that can paralyze one's spirit.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere conviction, visualizing Allah's perfect words as an impenetrable shield around you. Raise your hands slightly as you begin, and firmly intend to seek Allah's protection alone. It is recommended to recite it three times in the morning and three times in the evening, as this practice is rooted in the Sunnah for general protection. Focus on the meaning of each phrase, especially seeking refuge from the 'whispers of the devils and their presence,' which can manifest as persistent doubts.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua offers a powerful means of seeking Allah's comprehensive protection against various forms of evil, including those that attack the mind and spirit. By seeking refuge in Allah's perfect words, you are invoking His absolute power and mercy. The mention of seeking refuge from the 'evil of His creation' encompasses the harmful intentions of people, and the 'whispers of the devils' directly addresses the source of doubt and skepticism that can plague our hearts.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that a man said to the Prophet ﷺ: "O Messenger of Allah, what have I encountered from the scorpion today?" He said: "Had you said when evening came: 'A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq (I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created),' it would not have harmed you." The narrator said: 'So he encountered (the scorpion) the next year and he said this, and it did not harm him.' Another chain from Ayyub, from Ibn Sa'd, from Abu Hurairah who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever says in the evening, 'A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min ghadabihi wa 'iqabihi, wa min sharri 'ibadihi, wa min hamazatish-shayatin wa an yahdhurun (I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from His anger and His punishment, and from the evil of His creation, and from the whispers of the devils and their presence),' then no harm will come to him that night."
