Dua for Protection Against the Effects of Envy (Hasad)

Evil Eye & Hasad
QuranQuran 113:1-5

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Say: 'I seek refuge in the Lord of the dawn, from the evil of all that He has created, and from the evil of the darkening night as it falls, and from the evil of those who practice sorcery by tying knots, and from the evil of the envier when he envies.'

Bismillāhir-raḥmānir-raḥīm. Qul a'ūdhu birabbil-falaqi min sharri mā khalaqa wa min sharri ghāsiqin idhā waqaba wa min sharrin-naffāthāti fil-'uqadi wa min sharri ḥāsidin idhā ḥasada.

When to Read

This Surah, Al-Falaq, is a powerful protection. It's highly recommended to recite it regularly, especially in the morning and evening. When you feel the psychological sting of envy – your own or directed at you – reciting these verses can be a potent shield. It's also beneficial to read it before sleeping as a general safeguard.

How to Read

Recite with sincerity and firm belief in Allah's protection. Utter the words clearly, focusing on the meaning of seeking refuge from the specific evils mentioned, particularly the evil of the envier. You can recite it on its own or as part of the general remembrance (dhikr) of Allah. Many scholars recommend reciting Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas three times each in the morning and evening.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication directly addresses the evil of the envier. By seeking refuge in Allah, the Creator of all that exists, we are asking for His divine protection against the harm that envy can bring, whether it manifests as malicious intent, negative thoughts, or feelings of inadequacy stemming from comparing ourselves to others. It reinforces our reliance on Allah, reminding us that true strength and peace come from Him alone. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that these two Surahs (Al-Falaq and An-Nas) are among the best means of seeking refuge. Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Verily, there is no one who seeks refuge with others like a person who seeks refuge with Allah by reciting (the two Surahs of seeking refuge): Qul a'udhu bi Rabbil-falaq and Qul a'udhu bi Rabbin-nas.' (Tirmidhi 2904 - Hasan).
