Narrated Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri: The Prophet ﷺ said: 'If one of you sees a bad dream, it is from Satan, so he should seek refuge with Allah from its evil, and not tell it to anyone.'
‘An Abī Sa‘īd al-Khudrī, anna an-Nabiyya ṣallā Allāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam, qāla: ‘Idhā ta’awwaba aḥadukum fī an-nawmi fa innahu min ash-shayṭāni, fal-yata‘awwadh billāhi min sharrhā, wa lā yuḥaddith bihā aḥadan’
When to Read
This guidance is for when you wake up from a disturbing dream. It's a direct instruction from the Prophet ﷺ on how to handle such experiences, which are often linked to Satan’s whispers.
How to Read
Upon waking from a frightening dream, you should: 1. Seek refuge in Allah by saying: *A'udhu billahi minash-shaytanir-rajeem* (أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ - I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan). 2. Spit lightly to your left three times. 3. Do not tell anyone about the dream, as this can give it more power or cause unnecessary worry to others.
Virtues & Benefits
Following this Sunnah helps to neutralize the negative impact of bad dreams, which are attributed to Satan. By seeking Allah's protection, we shift our focus from fear to reliance on the Almighty, preventing the dream from causing distress or affecting our day. This also protects others from hearing potentially unsettling tales.
