Daily Evening Routine
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2708

أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ

I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created.

A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq

When to Read

This dua is recommended to be recited in the evening, specifically after sunset. It's a beautiful way to conclude your day, acknowledging that even during our waking hours, we may have erred. Incorporating it into your evening routine, perhaps before or after Maghrib prayer, can help us reflect and seek Allah's mercy.

How to Read

Recite this dua sincerely, with full conviction in Allah's protection and power. It's often recited three times in the evening, as mentioned in other narrations for similar protective duas, though this specific hadith mentions reciting it once in the morning and once in the evening. Focus on the meaning as you say it, asking Allah to shield you from all harm, seen and unseen, that you might have encountered or been exposed to throughout the day.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful supplication is a shield against all forms of evil. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated that whoever recites this in the morning and then passes away on that day, Paradise becomes incumbent upon him. Similarly, whoever recites it in the evening and then passes away on that night, Paradise becomes incumbent upon him. (Sahih Muslim 2710, 2711). While the specific hadith referenced for the text (Muslim 2708) focuses on seeking refuge from the evil of creation, the surrounding hadith and the principle of seeking Allah’s protection in the morning and evening highlight the immense benefit of making such duas. It signifies our reliance on Allah and our awareness of His encompassing power to protect us from any harm, including the sins and shortcomings of the day, seeking His forgiveness and mercy as the day ends.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'Whoever says 'A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaqa' (I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created) - and he did not encounter any creature while traveling with him - it will not harm him.' (Sahih Muslim 2708) Further context from other narrations: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Whoever says: *Subhan-Allahi wa bihamdihi* (Glory be to Allah and praise be to Him) one hundred times, his sins will be forgiven even if they were as abundant as the foam of the sea.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 6405) And: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'When evening comes, say: *Allahumma bismika ahya wa amut* (O Allah, by Your Name I live and by Your Name I die).' And when morning comes, say: *Allahumma bismika ahya wa amut* (O Allah, by Your Name I live and by Your Name I die).' (Sahih al-Bukhari 6313) Another hadith states: 'No servant says in the morning of every day and the evening of every night: *Bismillah alladhi la yadhurru ma'asmihi shay'un fil-ardi wa la fis-sama'i wa Huwa As-Samee'ul-'Aleem* (In the name of Allah, with Whose Name nothing can cause harm on earth or in heaven, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing), three times, but that nothing will harm him.'
