Seeking Allah's Protection from Nightmares

Daily Evening Routine
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim 6313, 2710

O Allah, I have submitted myself to You, entrusted my affair to You, and turned my face towards You for refuge, out of hope in You and fear of You. There is no refuge or sanctuary from You except with You. I believe in Your Book which You sent, and in Your Prophet whom You sent. If one dies at night, he dies on the Fitrah (Islam). If he reaches the morning, he has gained much good. (And in another narration: O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens, Lord of the Great Throne, be my protector from the evil of the one who is foolish, the evil of the unfortunate, and the evil that Satan may cause me by night or by day. When you go to your bed, say: Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise be to You. I seek Your forgiveness and turn to You in repentance. If you say this at night, you are forgiven until morning, and if you say it in the morning, you are forgiven until night.)

Fa in maatta min laylatihi, maata 'alal-fitrah. Wa in asbaha asbaha wa qad asaba khayran. (Wa fi riwayatin: Allahumma Rabba as-samawati as-sab', wa Rabba al-'arshil-'azeem, kun li jaran min sharri as-sakheef, wa sharri al-ba'is, wa sharri an yatakhabbatani ash-Shaytanu bi-laylin aw nahar. Qul: 'Indha akhadhta madhja'ak, faqul: Subhanak Allahumma, bi hamdik, astaghfiruk, wa atubu ilayk. Inni idha akhadhtu madhja'i, qultu: Subhanaka Allahumma, bi hamdik, astaghfiruk, wa atubu ilayk. Fa qad su'ila 'an dhalik, fa qeela: Qultuha fi laylati hadhihi, fa qala: Qad ghufira lak dhanbuk ila ghadik. Wa in qultaha fi yawmik, qulta: Ghufira lak ma 'amilt ila an tusbih. Wa in qultaha fi laylatik, qulta: Ghufira lak ma 'amilt ila an tusbih.)

When to Read

This comprehensive supplication is recommended to be recited before going to sleep. It serves as a comprehensive protection, encompassing general well-being and specifically guarding against any distressing dreams or nightmares that might occur during the night. Reciting it upon retiring to bed is a practice rooted in the Sunnah for seeking Allah's care.

How to Read

Ensure you are in a state of purity (wudu) before reciting. Face the Qiblah, recite with sincerity and conviction in Allah's protection. It is a prayer that seeks refuge and submission to the Almighty. The second part of the narration offers a shorter, yet powerful, phrase for seeking forgiveness and protection.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua offers immense protection. Firstly, it affirms your submission and trust in Allah, which is a source of great strength and peace. Secondly, as mentioned in the hadith, reciting it ensures you die upon Fitrah (natural disposition aligned with Islam) if you pass away that night. It also brings a sense of peace and well-being upon waking. The specific mention of seeking refuge from Satan's influence is a direct shield against disturbing nightmares.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'When you go to your bed, recite the Verse of the Throne (Ayat al-Kursi) and 'Allahumma inni aslamtu wajhi ilayk, wa fawwadtu amri ilayk, wa alja'tu zhahri ilayk, raghbatan wa rahbatan ilayk, la malja'a wa la manja minka illa ilayk. If you die on that night, you will die in a state of Fitrah (natural disposition of Islam). And if you wake up in the morning, you will wake up with a lot of good.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 6313). Another narration states: When you take to your bed, say: 'Subhanaka Allahumma, bi hamdik, astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayk.' (Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise be to You. I seek Your forgiveness and turn to You in repentance.) If you recite this at night and die, it will be as if you have performed worship throughout the night. If you recite it in the morning and die, it will be as if you have completed the service throughout the day. (Sahih Muslim 2710). The latter part also covers seeking refuge from Satan's influence.
