Dua for Seeking Allah's Assistance in Overcoming Evening Regrets

Daily Evening Routine
Sahih HadithSunan Abi Dawud 1555

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, and I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, and I seek refuge in You from cowardice and miserliness, and I seek refuge in You from being overcome by debt and the subjugation of men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazan, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasal, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhl, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijal.

When to Read

This powerful dua is specifically recommended by the Prophet ﷺ to be recited in the **morning and evening**. If you find yourself reflecting on the day's events as night falls, perhaps feeling the weight of missed opportunities, unmet expectations, or difficult interactions, this is an excellent time to turn to Allah with these words. It’s a perfect addition to your daily evening routine, helping you transition from the day's worries to a state of peace and reliance on Allah before sleep.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere reflection on each phrase, understanding the specific evils you are seeking refuge from. When you say 'anxiety and sorrow,' truly bring to mind any regrets or worries from the day. When you mention 'incapacity and laziness,' consider areas where you felt you fell short and ask Allah for strength. Performing wudu before reciting, even if not strictly necessary, can help foster a state of mindfulness and presence with Allah. Recite it with conviction, trusting that Allah will respond to your sincere plea.

Virtues & Benefits

The profound benefit of this dua is beautifully illustrated by the experience of Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him). When he recited these words as taught by the Prophet ﷺ, 'Allah removed his worry and settled his debt.' This teaches us that reciting this dua with sincerity can lead to the removal of spiritual burdens like regret and sorrow, as well as practical difficulties like financial distress. It instills inner peace, strengthens reliance on Allah, and frees the heart from the grip of past regrets, allowing you to face tomorrow with hope and renewed trust in His divine assistance. It is a shield against the negative psychological impacts of daily life, transforming worry into tranquility.

Source & Authentication

One day, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered the Masjid and saw a man from the Ansar called Abu Umamah. He ﷺ said, 'O Abu Umamah, what is the matter with you that I see you sitting in the Masjid when it is not the time for prayer?' He said, 'Worries and debts have overtaken me, O Messenger of Allah.' He ﷺ said, 'Shall I not teach you some words which, if you say them, Allah will remove your worry and settle your debt?' He said, 'Yes, O Messenger of Allah.' He ﷺ said, 'Say in the morning and evening: [the dua]' Abu Umamah said: I did that, and Allah removed my worry and settled my debt. — Sunan Abi Dawud 1555
