Daily Evening Routine
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5087

In the name of Allah, with whose name nothing harms on earth nor in the heaven, and He is the Hearing, the Knowing.

Bismillāhilladhī lā yaḍurru ma'asmihi shay'un fil-arḍi wa lā fis-samā'i wa huwas-Samī'ul-'Alīm

When to Read

This dua is recommended to be recited in the evening, after Maghrib prayer, as part of our daily protection. It's a beautiful way to seal off our day, entrusting ourselves to Allah's care as we enter the night, a time when susceptibility to unseen harm can feel more pronounced.

How to Read

Recite this dua three times. Make sure to say it with sincere conviction, understanding that Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) is the ultimate protector. Uttering it with a present heart, focusing on its meaning and trusting in the words of the Prophet ﷺ, amplifies its power.

Virtues & Benefits

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this powerful supplication for protection against all forms of harm, including the evil eye and envy, which can be subtle yet potent forces. By reciting it, we actively seek refuge in Allah's perfect name, acknowledging His absolute power over all creation and His omnipresent knowledge. It shields us from any ill effects that might be sent our way, seen or unseen. Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that a man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: 'O Messenger of Allah! I have been stung by a scorpion last night.' He said: 'If you had said, when evening came: *Bismillāhilladhī lā yaḍurru ma'asmihi shay'un fil-arḍi wa lā fis-samā'i wa huwas-Samī'ul-'Alīm* (In the name of Allah, with whose name nothing harms on earth nor in the heaven, and He is the Hearing, the Knowing), it would not have harmed you.' (Sunan Abi Dawud 5087, classified as Hasan by Al-Albani). This shows its efficacy not just for physical ailments, but for any form of harm.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Whoever says in the morning: *'Subhan-Allahi wa bihamdihi'* (Glory be to Allah and by His praise), one hundred times, his sins will be forgiven even if they were like the foam of the sea. And whoever says in the evening: *'Subhan-Allahi wa bihamdihi'* (Glory be to Allah and by His praise), one hundred times, his sins will be forgiven even if they were like the foam of the sea. And whoever says: *'Subhan-Allahil-'azim wa bihamdihi'* (Glory be to Allah the Almighty and by His praise), will be forgiven what is in the sea. And whoever says: *'La ilaha illallah wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in qadir'* (There is no god but Allah Alone, with no partner, His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He is Able to do all things), ten times, will have the reward of freeing four slaves from the children of Isma'il. And whoever says them in the morning, they will be a protection for him until the evening; and whoever says them in the evening, they will be a protection for him until the morning. And whoever says: *'Bismillāhilladhī lā yaḍurru ma'asmihi shay'un fil-arḍi wa lā fis-samā'i wa huwas-Samī'ul-'Alīm'* (In the name of Allah, with whose name nothing harms on earth nor in the heaven, and He is the Hearing, the Knowing), three times, will not be afflicted with sudden affliction until morning, and whoever says it in the morning three times, will not be afflicted with sudden affliction until the evening.'
